Description
The Large-Area Picosecond Photo-Detector (LAPPDTM) is a thin, planar, 20x20-cm2-area photo-detector with gain of 107 and single photo-electron time resolution better than 50 ps. I will discuss recent progress in the development of a PMT-like batch production process for manufacturing the LAPPDTM. The development of such a non-vacuum transfer process with potentially high throughput is motivated by needs of the future large-scale neutrino experiments. In particular, separation of Cherenkov and scintillation light in a liquid scintillator detector using fast timing allows for direction reconstruction. Combined with scalability to large volumes and good energy resolution, this would enhance the scientific reach of large liquid-scintillator-based detectors, especially for searches for neutrino-less double-beta decay.
