Learning from $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ effectively

There has been rapid progress in inclusive and exclusive b->s l+ l- measurements and the corresponding theory. Recent ideas how to extract maximal model-independent information about the short-distance physics will be explained (hep-ph/0612156). I'll also discuss how the semileptonic B -> X_u l nu shape function enters the inclusive B -> X_s l+ l- measurements in the low q^2 region, and its implications (hep-ph/0512191).
