Description
Free-free radiative transitions like magnetic Bremmstrahlung
(synchrotron radiation) and inverse Compton scattering were long of
interest to astrophysicists. But it took many years for the practical
role of this mechanism to be sorted out amongst both the community of
accelerator physicists and the greater research community that now
depends on these mechanisms in a process that is still very much
underway.
In this talk I will discuss both a bit of the history of these
developments as they have unfolded over the last 50 years and also the
direction and status of our present research here at UH on the
underlying physis of these sources and the development of the next
generation of high performance x-ray and gamma ray light sources.
