Description

I review some of the early history of string theory and its relations to strong interactions. Then, D-branes and their gravitational properties are used to motivate the AdS/CFT correspondence. Applications to thermal gauge theory and possible connections to physics at RHIC are then discussed. Extensions of the gauge/gravity duality to confining gauge theories are used to introduce warped throat backgrounds, which may have applications to modeling cosmological inflation.
