Description

The dubbing of neutrinos as ghost particles follows many years of references, perhaps originating from the John Updike (New Yorker) poem of 1960. While not exactly accurate, it catches the spirit and mystery of these most abundant elementary building block particles that suffuse the universe. Prof. Maricic will host the one hour long movie and will lead discussions afterwards.

Apologies in advance since the presentation pitches to a general audience and not the usual physicist level for our Colloquia aiming at Grad Students and above in expertise. However, the quality of the presentation and filming may compensate, even for experts not learning any new physics, and may please by giving a nice overview of neutrino studies and showing some great images.  The main topic revolves around the DUNE experiment, now numbering more than one thousand participants, and of which Prof. Maricic is our UH main representative (and also Gary Varner, Kurtis Nishimura, and John Learned). DUNE which will be located at Fermilab near Chicago as the neutrino beam source, and have huge neutrino detectors in the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, 1300 km distant through the earth. The movie is quite CERN centric, since they produced it and because the first large scale prototype of a liquid argon time projection chamber has been built and operated there. But also the film covers related matters including a lengthy interview with Takaaki Kajita of our SuperKamiokande experiment for which we won the Nobel for discovery of neutrino oscillations in 2015 (and I cannot resist bragging that the first draft of the Nobel winning paper was written here at UH).

I think you will find it worth watching. We will host an open discussion after the hour long presentation.

You may be able to watch the movie on your own at https://online.cineglobe.ch/film/ghost-particle/  though is sounds as though they are intending to charge for viewing soon.
