The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science operates highly complex accelerator machines - light sources - that produce very high brightness x-rays. Scientists from around the world use these facilities to investigate problems in many scientific disciplines, from materials science to biology, chemistry, environmental, geological, and planetary science, and fundamental physics. The spread of the SARS CoV-2 virus and the ensuing COVID-19 pandemic created an urgent need for tools to guide the development of therapeutics and vaccines against the virus. In this talk, I will present how the DOE light sources are playing a critical role to end the pandemic.
