Description

The KEK B Factory, KEKB, is the current world record holder for luminosity, with a peak luminosity of 1.7x1034 cm-2 s-1. Plans are being made for an upgrade, to SuperKEKB, which aims for a luminosity up to 50 times higher. Achieving this will require pushing the beam-beam parameters beyond what has ever been achieved, into regions that are still an active area of study and modeling. I will discuss factors that determine the luminosity, and the latest plans to address them at SuperKEKB. John Flanagan did his PhD here at UHM, with the first thesis on muon neutrino oscillations in SuperK, and he is now senior staff member at the KEK laboratory in Japan
