Recent developments in fast photon detectors and high speed electronics have created extensive opportunities for a new generation of high performance, low cost experiments. Single photon detection is now possible at timing resolutions of ~100 ps or better using a variety of photodetector technologies, for example conventional PMTs, solid state devices, or micro-channel plate detectors. These can be coupled to front-end and back-end readout systems made from commercial components and commodity computing and networking hardware.
As a result, experiments can be made more compactly, and with improved performance over their historical counterparts. I will discuss some examples of these technologies and how they are changing various applications in particle imaging, including compact neutrino detectors for fundamental physics and radiation imagers for safety and security applications.
